The book is dedicated to the life and deeds of Saint Spyridon, Bishop of Trimifunt, a city in Cyprus. The years of Spiridon's life fall at the end of the 3rd - the first half of the 4th century. In this era in the Roman Empire under Constantine the Great, the free religion of Christianity was finally allowed (Edict of Milan in 313) and the Nicene Creed (325) was adopted. Saint Spyridon was one of those bishops who participated in the Council of Nicaea. Under Emperor Maximinus II Daza, Bishop Spiridon, like many Christians throughout the empire, was subjected to severe persecution, but thanks to his faith he was able to survive severe trials.
When the Arabs captured Cyprus in the 7th century, the imperishable relics of Spyridon were transferred to Constantinople, and after its conquest by the Turks in the middle of the 15th century, they were transferred to Corfu in 1489, where they still rest in the Church of St. Spyridon (XVI century), located in the administrative capital of the island.
Particles of the relics of St. Spyridon are also kept in Rome and Moscow.
