• According to legend, the Jerusalem icon was painted by the Evangelist Luke in the Garden of Gethsemane about 15 years after the Ascension of Christ.

• In 463, the icon type was brought to Constantinople and later venerated in the Blachernai Church.

• The icon has been greatly venerated over the centuries and is associated with miracles – healings, protection from plagues, etc.

• Iconographically, it belongs to the Hodegetria category (Mary points to Christ).
